The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recently reported $3.5 billion in settlements and judgments from civil cases involving fraud and false claims in FY 2015 – $1.9 billion of which came from companies and individuals in the health care industry. DOJ notes that the $1.9 billion reflects only federal recoveries; in many cases, there were additional recoveries for consumers and state Medicaid programs. Whistleblowers filed 638 qui tam suits in FY 2015, and whistleblower awards totaled $597 million. Additional details, including highlights of large health care industry recoveries, are provided in a DOJ press release.
