On February 14, 2012, the Obama Administration announced that the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program recovered $4.1 billion in FY 2011 from anti-fraud efforts — the highest annual amount ever recovered from individuals and companies. The DOJ also opened 1,110 new criminal health care fraud investigations involving 2,561 potential defendants, and 743 defendants were convicted of health care fraud-related crimes during the year. With regard to civil cases, DOJ opened 977 new civil health care fraud investigations and had 1,069 civil health care fraud matters pending at the end of the fiscal year. In addition, the OIG excluded 2,662 individuals and entities based on: criminal convictions for crimes related to Medicare, Medicaid, or other health care programs; patient abuse or neglect; or as a result of licensure revocations.
