The OIG has issued a report entitled “Inappropriate Claims for Medicaid Personal Care Services.” Based on a review of 450 Medicaid claims for personal care services (PCS) provided from September 1, 2006, through August 31, 2007 in 10 states, the OIG estimates that attendant qualifications were undocumented for 18% of claims, resulting in $724 million in inappropriate payments. In response to the OIG’s recommendations, the CMS described plans to work with states to ensure that Medicaid claims for PCS provided by attendants who do not meet states’ qualifications are not paid, and the agency committed to taking action regarding the inappropriate claims the OIG identified.
