The HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) has released a “Roadmap for New Physicians: Avoiding Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse,” which summarizes the five main federal fraud and abuse laws (the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark Law, the Exclusion Statute, and the Civil Monetary Penalties Law). The document also provides tips on how physicians should comply with these laws in their relationships with payers such as Medicare and Medicaid, relationships with vendors (e.g., drug , biologic, and medical device companies), and relationships with other providers (e.g. hospitals, nursing homes, and physicians). The publication was developed in response to the interest of medical schools in additional educational materials.
