The OIG has issued a report entitled, “Review of Medicare Parts A and B Services Billed With Dates of Service After Beneficiaries’ Deaths.” Based on a sample review, the OIG recently estimated that CMS did not identify and recover $8.2 million in overpayments for Medicare Part B claims with dates of service after the beneficiaries’ deaths. The OIG recommended that CMS take a number of steps to recoup identified overpayments and prevent future overpayments by improving the collection and reporting of dates of death data and establishing related claims edits. CMS concurred with the OIG’s recommendations.
