On March 13, 2012, the OIG issued a Fraud Alert for People with Diabetes, warning that individuals with diabetes are being targeted in scams offering free diabetic supplies or other health care items in exchange for Medicare information or other financial information. If beneficiaries receive a call of this type, the OIG warns individuals not to provide their Medicare number or other personal information. Beneficiaries are encouraged to report the call to the OIG and to review their Medicare Summary Notice to see if they were charged for items they did not order or did not receive. The OIG also suggests refusing to accept delivery of any item the beneficiary did not order.
