CMS has released a new Medicare Summary Notice designed to make it easier for Medicare beneficiaries to understand their benefits and file appeals. Improvements include, among other things, a snapshot of the beneficiary’s deductible status, a list of providers seen by the beneficiary, information on claims status, and consumer-friendly descriptions of medical procedures. By giving beneficiaries clearer information regarding Medicare services billed on their behalf, CMS also expects the new MSN to help beneficiaries spot potential fraud. The redesigned MSN is available online at mymedicare.gov, and paper copies of the redesigned MSN will begin being mailed to beneficiaries quarterly starting in 2013.
